Murbah Open Day 2019 raises $25,000 for Wedgetail Retreat

A crowd of 1,500 thrummed throughout our Murwillumbah site..

After another Saturday of music, food and fresh Murbah Swamp Beer poured straight from the source, we’d like to thank our community for helping us raise $25,000 for Tweed Palliative Support & Wedgetail Retreat.

For the third year running, on Saturday 30 March, we opened our brewery gates for Murwillumbah Open Day – a daylight festival of live music, food trucks, markets stalls and beer, and an occasion for members of the Northern Rivers community and its surrounds to connect in support of Wedgetail Retreat.

Despite storm clouds and light rains, a determined crowd of 1,500 thrummed throughout our Murwillumbah site, with a consistent line of visitors filing through the brewery to check out the bottling-line action. Kids decked out in costumes and flower crowns brought the Malt Disney kids area to life, while friends and families shared beers and laughs around the open-air space. With Jerome Williams, The High Rollers and Andy Jans-Brown on the live music stage, many took the opportunity to dance out the afternoon.

For another year running, our Murbah Swamp Beer – an homage to local legend – was a hit. Made for easy drinking, this year’s Murbah Swamp Beer was a session ale with a pale and wheat malt backbone, floral aromas and subtle stone fruit flavours, thanks to hop additions of Ella and Victoria’s Secret. Cheers to that!

Alongside a happy crowd, the team at Wedgetail Retreat held a stall where visitors could buy a slice of cake or a sausage sandwich as a donation to the organisation. Meanwhile, their passionate crew members collected donations both at their stall and the brewery entrance.

A day for connection, we were thrilled again to spend time with our local community and see visitors from the Northern Rivers and beyond spending time together. In fact, on several occasions we’ve had locals recount how, at Open Day, they’ve run into old neighbours or colleagues that they haven’t seen all year! We’re stoked to run Open Day for moments like this.

We’d like to thank everyone who came to our third Murbah Open Day – it’s a huge pleasure for us to host this awesome community in our brewery and continue to make connections. Together, we are delighted to continue supporting Wedgetail Retreat for years to come.

A big ‘thank you’ to our crew there on the day, too – we couldn’t do it without you all! And thank you to our mates at Mt Warning Tours for providing bus transfers to and from the event; all the fantastic food trucks and producers; and the musicians.

We look forward to next year’s Murbah Open Day!
