Live music, food trucks and Murbah Swamp Beer are back at our Murwillumbah brewery for the third annual Murbah Open Day, in partnership with Tweed Palliative Support & Wedgetail Retreat.
Save the date now, folks – Saturday 30 March from 11.00am to 5.00pm.
On the back of two successful years, we’re opening our gates and welcoming the community back to the Murbah brewery for great food, live music, local artists, brewery tours, our kids area Malt Disney – and of course, ice-cold beers straight from the source.
Here, local families and beer-lovers can wander through our curated selection of market stalls featuring local artisans, artists and craftsmen, before jumping over to the food trucks. Gunter’s Flammkuchen and JuJu’s (Backyard Chef) & Zicatela Woodfire Mexican– three of the region’s best – will be cooking up epic meals and snacks, while a coffee cart will wait next door for those craving a caffeine kick. Soda and water refill stations, plus ice-blocks for kids, will also be available.
Speaking of kids, our dedicated kids area, Malt Disney, will also be back with a jumping castle, crafts, entertainment and face painting – all for a gold coin donation.
And of course, back by popular demand and in homage to the legendary local tale, a fresh, exclusive Pilot Batch of Murbah Swamp Beer will be flowing on the day.
Haven’t heard about Murbah Swap Beer? Boy, what a tale.
One otherwise-normal Good Friday back in April 2001, a semi-trailer carrying 40,000 bottles of beer ran off the Pacific Highway and tumbled into the Tweed River. Soon after, to no one’s surprise, thousands of beer bottles escaped the trailer and began sinking to the bottom of the murky river. No sooner had locals heard about the incident had they made a break for the river, diving in courageously to ‘save’ the still-icy-cold beers. See the whole story in this short film here.
For the true frothers, we’ll have exclusive organic cotton Murbah Swamp Beer T-shirts for sale in the merch tent, with all profits from shirt sales donated to Wedgetail Retreat.
We’ll also be operating our cup exchange initiative #forcupssake again, which helps us eliminate single-use cups from our events. When purchasing the first beer of the day, punters simply pay an extra $3 deposit on a re-useable plastic cup that they can return when exiting for a $2 refund. Otherwise, these cups can be kept as a Murbah Open Day momento.
Murbah Swamp Beer will be tapped on the day, alongside other Stone & Wood brews pouring straight from the tank.
The best part is that, for the third year running, all profits from Murbah Open Day will go to our partners, the Wedgetail Retreat. With the help of last year’s attendees, we raised $30,000 for the vital palliative care service and hope to make the same achievement this year!
Stay tuned for following announcements on market stalls, the site map, bus timetables and the music line-up.
