Stalls were prepped with good food, bars were stocked with good beer and charity buckets were ready to be filled with gold coin donations... Last Saturday's Open Day has finally arrived!
We were amazed by the 1500 people who flooded through our brewery gates - families, friends, faces old and new. Everyone was ready for a day of fun in the hot sun!
From the generous donations made at the gate by the community and at the stall managed by Wedgetail Retreat and Tweed Palliative Care, along with the beer sold throughout the day, we collectively raised $25,375 for this incredible community organisation!
From 11am til 5pm, live music echoed throughout the surrounding cane fields as the Magic Bus transported visitors to and from town. Beers lovers cheers'd and queued for brewery tours as kids played and bounced on the jumping castle. Stories were told about the great 'Murbah Swamp Beer' over the inspired Pilot Batch we brewed for the occasion...Murbah Open Day went off and it felt incredible for all involved!
We were so stoked that Brendan McDonald (featured) received the first taste of the Pilot Batch brew with his friends and family, along with some local characters who actually came up with the name in 2001 and were featured on the mini doco.
Brendan has brain cancer and has been staying at Wedgetail Retreat community hospice for respite, on and off for the last 4 weeks. One of our boys Tommy Ruhl, heard that he was getting married last weekend and turned up to the Murwillumbah Golf Club and stocked the bar with free beer. We knew he'd want a taste of the Pilot Batch beer so to officially opened the event by tapping the beer for him.
For us, our Open Day was an opportunity to connect and give back to our community and to raise money for The Wedgetail Retreat and Tweed Palliative Support, a community organisation that was chosen by the team after speaking with local businesses and individuals in town.
We're so humbled by everyone who came out to enjoy the day, to share a few beers, to put on high-vis and boots to tour the brewery and to connect.
It’s fair to say, the Murbah Open Day will now be an annual event in the calendar.
See you all again next year!
